Gregory of Sinai

Founder of Hesychasm on Mount Athos (qq.v.). Originally a monk at Sinai (q.v.), he went to Mount Athos, where he introduced the so-called Jesus prayer ("Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me"), repeated over and over again as one meditated with controlled breathing. Soon the Athonian monasteries became the center of Hesychasm. He left Athos ca. 1330 and settled at Paroria in Thrace (q.v.), where he enjoyed the patronage of Ivan Alexander, tsar of Bulgaria (qq.v.). Among his disciples were Kallistos, twice patriarch of Constantinople, and Theodosios of Turnovo (qq.v.).
